DNF predictions for F1 fantasy: reliability, first-lap chaos, and the last-two rule
Two DNF slots look like lottery tickets. They are not. They are a map of who starts in the firing line and who is still breaking parts.
Three kinds of retirement
Mechanical: power unit, gearbox, hydraulics. Look at who already took penalties this season and who is on an old engine. Contact: first-lap circuits (Mexico, Austria, Jeddah) and drivers who dive more than they finish. Operational: botched pit, illegal start, disqualification after the flag — rarer, but they still count as not classified.
Do not double-stack two teammates unless the car is genuinely fragile. One mechanical issue can park both, but more often one car dies and the other limps home. Split the risk across teams.
When nobody retires
Clean Grands Prix happen. On F1RaceDraft, if the classified result has no DNFs, the last two cars in the finishing order fill those slots. That keeps the round scorable. Your “DNF” pick in that case is really a last-place prediction.
On high-degradation tracks that still finish green, think about who is starting last after a penalty. They are the last-two candidates even if the mechanicals all hold.
Do not waste a slot on a joke pick
The field will load the obvious crash magnet. If you want to beat the league, pair one chaos name with one quiet reliability worry. Lock both on your weekend team before the five-minute cutoff.
